Does Your Pet Deserve Homemade Pet Food?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

The recent news has been full of pet food recalls for a variety of reasons. The biggest has been tainted wheat gluten that is suspected to be the cause of kidney failures and death of many beloved pets.

This makes me wonder how many pet owners actually know what they are feeding their pets and just as important is whether they know how nutritious the food is.

Do you know that:

  • 3 of the top 5 pet food companies are owned by major multinational corporations?

  • the protein sources in the pet food you give your animal may not be appropriate for it?

  • many of the ingredients used in pet food are not suitable for human consumption? Some of these ingredients may be animal intestines, bones, blood, lungs, ligaments and just about every other part of the animal that can not be placed in the human food chain. Some of the grains that are used may be grains that were tainted by various means which made them unsuitable for humans BUT there is no regulation preventing their use in pet foods.

  • the nutritional value of each batch of pet food varies from the previous batch?

  • some pet foods have to be sprayed with a thin layer of used restaurant grease so animals will eat the food? This restaurant grease may sit out in the weather in 50 gallon drums and turn rancid before being picked up. Several of these drums of different kinds of grease may be combined and stabilized with powerful antioxidants to prevent further spoilage before the pet food company sprays this product on your pet’s food.

  • that the pungent odor you smell when you open a new bag of pet food just may be the smell of rancid grease?

  • that paw licking, dandruff, bad breath, hot spots, itching and scratching may be signs of improper nutrition?

The most recent pet food recall has been for tainted wheat gluten but other recalls have been for e-coli.

Your pet is a friend and family member and it deserves better.

Homemade pet foods, organic pet foods and all natural pet foods are all options in addition to feeding your pet only human food. The problem with some of these options may be that your pet isn’t getting the proper nutrition.

Most veterinarians are the animal equivalent of a general practitioner for humans. They are not taught that much about pet nutrition as part of the curriculum. Animal nutrition is a specialty. It’s still a good idea to pick the brains of your vet about nutrition for your furry friend but I’d seriously consider giving them canine liquid boost if they are a dog to ensure they get more of the vitamins and minerals they need. Cats have different requirements and I haven’t come across natural supplements for them so I’d seriously consider giving my feline friend either the human whole food vitamin supplement called Vitacomplete or the human liquid mineral supplement called cellfood.

Our pets are part of our families. Many of us already feed them table scraps. You need to decide if your family member and friend deserves homemade food and additional supplements or the off the shelf pet food that may or may not provide the nutrition that’s needed to be healthy.
